Mark This Zucks!
Facebook’s Billionaire CEO Mark Zuckerbeg was grilled during his Congressional Hearing this week about user privacy, data collection, political bias and the social network's business model. During the five-hour testimony on Wednesday, Zuckerberg admitted that his profile data was among those exposed in the Cambridge Analytica. He stated that Facebook is contemplating legal action, saying there might be a slew of apps that collected data on Facebook users in a similar fashion to Cambridge Analytica. "Every time that someone chooses to share something on Facebook ... there is a control. Not buried in the settings somewhere but right there," Zuckerberg said. There were a number of areas that Facebook failed to protect its users. There was a clear overtone that Mr Zuckerberg lacked knowledge and awareness of the practices and implications of his company and does not directly imply that he may want to change the business model of Facebook.
Perhaps the most interesting questions during the hearing came from Congressman G.K. Butterfield who pressed Zuckerberg with some hard hitting questions about their Diversity and Inclusion practices stating “CEO leadership on issues of diversity is the only way that the Technology industry will change. Can you meet with leaders to develop a strategy to increase diversity? Your leadership team does not reflect America. We can do better than that Mr. Zuckerberg!” Watch here https://www.c-span.org/video/?c4722960/congressman-gk-butterfield-diversity-questions
Facebook has massive growth with over 1 Billion users connected across the globe. If Facebook had a country it would be the 3rd most populous country in the world.
So what should Facebook’s leadership team focus on next and how can they turn this around for good? Well, taking more accountability and action to protect the privacy and data of all its users across the globe as well as creating better Diversity and Inclusion practices including expanding their leadership team to create a broader perspective on connecting the world to a safe and healthy social network.
